Failure to detect resistance to beta-lactams in certain
susceptibility tests used routinely in bacteriology laboratories
is a problem.
False susceptible or inaccurate laboratory reports may
lead to inappropriate therapeutic intervention as the result of
the failure to detect resistance.
Failure of early detection of such MDR organism may also
allow the further spread of such MDR organisms in intensive care
and high dependency units in many institutions and hospitals
with infection control issues.
Phenotypic tests (agar diffusion and broth) have been criticised
when used with organisms that produce beta-lactamase;
nevertheless, with modifications and coupled with new molecular
tests they can be adapted and used effectively in documenting
inducible beta-lactamases and indexing susceptibility.
This
antimicrobial workshop will focus on available practical
laboratory methods both phenotypic and molecular in detecting
beta-lactamases such as AmpC, ESBL, MBL (IMP/VIM Type) and other
beta-lactam emerging resistances, interpretations, the
nosocomial significance of such findings in many institutions
and alternative therapeutic options.
