The Opening Plenary Address will be presented by Laureate Professor Peter C Doherty, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, University of Melbourne VIC and winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
In 1996 Professor Doherty was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. This research has had a major impact on the understanding of organ transplants and vaccine production. The Opening Plenary Address will be an ASM 2008 program highlight and not to be missed!

Rubbo Oration & Supper Monday 7 July 2008 | 7.30pm - 10.30pm Melbourne Convention Centre | John Batman Theatre
A premier scientific event of the conference is the prestigious Rubbo Oration to be delivered by Professor Alan Cowman, Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
Professor Cowman’s laboratory is at the forefront of global research efforts into the world’s most devastating human parasitic disease – malaria – and its causative agent Plasmodium falciparum. Malaria kills two million people each year, mostly children. His work has lead to an increased understanding of the strategies the parasite uses to infect and survive in the human host.
8.30pm - 10.30pm | The Oration will be followed by a sumptuous buffet supper.
Admission Admission includes the Rubbo Oration and all food & beverages served at the supper.
Tuesday 8 July | 5.30pm - 6.30pm Melbourne Convention Centre | Exhibition Hall
A cocktail hour dedicated to the industry to showcase advances in technology, state of the art equipment and new product and service information. A perfect networking opportunity.
Admission Admission includes entry to the Exhibition Hall, plus canapés & beverages served.
