Networking is an important element of the conference and is one
of the reasons why many delegates attend! ASM 2008
Melbourne will provide plenty of opportunities for delegates to

The Opening Plenary Address will be
presented by Laureate Professor Peter C Doherty,
Department of Microbiology &
Immunology, University of Melbourne VIC and winner of the
1996 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
In 1996 Professor Doherty was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine for discovering how the immune system
recognizes virus-infected cells. This research has had a major
impact on the understanding of organ transplants and vaccine
production. The Opening Plenary Address will be an ASM
2008 program highlight and not to be missed!
Enjoy delicious canapés, entertainment and
fine Victorian wine as you mix with colleagues, peers and
industry representatives during the Welcome Reception to mark the official opening of the ASM
2008 Exhibition. Admission

A premier scientific event of the
conference is the prestigious Rubbo Oration to be delivered by
Professor
Alan Cowman, Head of the Division of Infection and Immunity
at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
Professor Cowman’s laboratory
is at the forefront of global research efforts into the world’s
most devastating human parasitic disease – malaria – and its
causative agent Plasmodium falciparum. Malaria kills two
million people each year, mostly children. His work has lead to
an increased understanding of the strategies the parasite uses
to infect and survive in the human host.
8.30pm - 10.30pm | The Oration will be followed by a
sumptuous buffet supper.
